Sharing a WD My Passport Ultra hard drive with my partner

Hi - just purchased and installed the above hard drive.   My partner and I want to share it, but we want to keep our files separate from each others.

Does anyone know if I could copy files from my laptop to the hard drive, and then copy my partner’s files from his laptop and keep them stored separately from mine on the hard drive, so that all my docs/photos/music are kept together in one area, and his are kept separately to mine in another specified area?

If possible we’d like to do this so that all our documents are mixed up altogether.

Thanks.

whoops. last sentence should read:  If possible we’d like to do this so that all our documents are NOT mixed up altogether.

You can partition the drive and each use a different partition.

Joe

Well I just asked that question when I spoke with the service desk today. The rep told me that my wife CANNOT access my Passport Ultra thru my network which we share. So, if that answer is correct, then you can’t share the device THROUGH THE NETWORK. I don’t know enough about networks to know if the answer is correct. I would like others to comment on this point. I do know that it is possible to give her access to files on my computer through the net work, so why not give her access to the WD software?

There is a way to give your partner access to your device, but it is cumbersome. You can attatch it to his computer and install the software on his computer, using a separate name for his computer. Then do a transfer of data to the device. Then re-attatch the device to your computer and keep it there on “continual backup” until he wants to do another periodic backup again. The data will be separate. Your message seemed to indicate that you wanted the data to be mingled. Maybe that is possible if you give the same name to both computers. I doubt it because the device will probably reject the 2nd identical name. Let’s see what others have to say. Steve.

Aha! Sandy D. does want the data to be separate. Then the cumbersome method might work for him. Someone please comment on the issue os sharing a Passport through a network and what might need to be done to do that. Steve.
