SD UHS-II USB-C Reader won't transfer video unless it's viewed first

I have just bought a SanDisk SD UHS-II USB-C Reader so that I can view my NextBase DashCam files on my iMac.

I have found that I can’t transfer any video files to my iMac, or to my Macbook Air, unless I first view them on the SD card via the SanDisk reader.

Once viewed they transfer perfectly well. Is this normal behaviour?
