Sandisk fires engineering Staff of MP3 Players

Seems that Sadisk may be ditching its MP3 players.  Recent cuts in the staff are sure to not help the line of great MP3 Players.  If anyone has more details please feel free to point me in the right direction.  I know that being layed off is not always fun but cut in R&D by a tech company signal bigger problems.

Where exactly did you hear that? Post links!

Well I am hoping that something official would be said.  I just hope they know what they are doing cause I really like the SANSA players and dread giving my money to ipod!!!  There are a lot of people I have helped with MP3 players and I always recommened Sandisks.  With more features and better layout it was an easy recommendation but if they are shutting down R&D the crucial part that makes them better I see no reason to stick with them.

Is there any Sandisk employees on here?

Again you are the only person who has said anything which leads me to believe you may have been mis-informed. If you could please identify your sources or like the pages that you got the info you are talking about from that would be helpful.

SanDisk still plans to lay off 10 percent to maintain the capital expenditure forecast after decline
Flash memory card maker SanDisk Wednesday said that the company would still plan to lay off 10% of the employees so as to maintain its 2009 capital expenditure. As a result of the global economic crisis, they must cut down non-essential expenditures.

“We will continue to invest in the areas that are most strategic for our future, including advanced NAND and 3D read/write development, mobile storage, solid-state disk, and slotMusic,” Harari said.

Milpitas - More than 300 people could be losing their jobs at SanDisk. That number represents about 10% of the company’s global workforce.

SanDisk made the announcement during a financial presentation Wednesday morning.

In related news, SanDisk plans to reduce its capital investments to no more than $900 million dollars next year. That’s down from an earlier forecast of $1.3 billion.

Can you post me a link to your Ouija board, because I am missing the link to any mention of the Sansa line?  I must have “magic hyperlinks” disabled.

Looking at the big picture, difficulties are not limited to SanDisk.

Chinese web-site. No apparent English version. Very convenient, if no one can challenge your translation.

http://news.cnet.com/8301-13924_3-10072819-64.html

This news article is from 2 1/2 months ago when Samsung was considering (but then backed out of) merging with SanDisk. Not exactly ‘current events’.

http://www.edn.com/article/CA6607327.html

Quote from previous link is actually from this one! Again it is from a 2 1/2 month-old news article:

“…“canceling or exiting a number of products and marketing activities, and will result in employee reduction in R&D, Sales & Marketing, G&A, and Operations.” …”

What wasn’t quoted here was the very next sentence:

[The company gave no further detail on the job cuts during its quarterly call.]

I see no mention of specific areas of ‘product-exiting’ or ‘MP3 engineering staff jobs on cutting block’.

Again, no specifics.

Exact word-for-word repeat of same 2 previously linked news releases from October, 2008 only on a different site.

http://kliv.com/SANDISK-LOOKING-AT-LAYOFFS/3477162

Again, a ‘snippet’ of same information from October. Old news.

http://www.smartmoney.com/breaking-news/on/?story=ON-20081210-000833-1500&afl=yahoo

Breaking News? Hardly! A month old and in this one the reporter didn’t even get SanDisk’s location correct. Their home office is located in Milpitas, not Sunnyvale, CA. If they couldn’t be bothered to correct this well-known fact before publishing, one has to question the validity of anything else stated in the article.

http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/06/sandisk-likely-to-cut-15-of-staff-as-it-downsizes/

Oh, this one is original! Unfortunately, just as in-accurate. 15% job cuts are forecast, not 10% as reported in every other linked news article. Where are these figures coming from? Likely pulled out of somebody’s hat. It certainly wouldn’t be the 1st time that a media organization inflated, over-emphasized, mis-represented, or even ‘stretched’ the truth in order to make more of an impact with it’s ‘news’ offering and thereby imply that they have the ‘real facts’ only because their report is different from the rest.

Oh yeah, and it’s 2 months old, too.

I read each one of these offered links (except the 1st one as I only read and/or speak English) and no where; I repeat NO WHERE did I see any evidence of what you claim in your salacious Subject line or in your original post.

No mention is made or even hinted at that the mp3 engineers are among those being laid off. R & D dept’s are comprised of many more people, talented in a variety of fields. So why are you assuming (and attempting to spread the ‘rumor’) that SanDisk’s cut-back plans are specifically targeted at this small area of employees?

Many large, formerly ‘bullet-proof’ companies are experiencing tough times right now. Even Toyota & Honda, who before this down-turn in economy never saw a speck of red ink in their P & L statements are now being forced to cut back and lay off in order to survive.

What company, large or small is not having to re-think their strategy and re-organize their priorities in order to stay competitive and/or come out still afloat on the other side of this?

You have seemed to have ‘blanketed’ this forum in multiple boards with this same, un-substantiated claim in your short time as a member here. I hesitate to ‘drop the T-bomb’, but usually behavior such as this is exhibited by a person who more often than not, gets labeled or described as someone not very attractive who lives under a bridge or is short, stout, naked, has buggy eyes, a big nose and pink hair.

If this is not your intention and you wish to avoid this, I would suggest considering very carefully what you post here (or on any public forum for that matter).

Nice BS meter though, Bob!

I do like the BS meter too.  Of course Trolls are furry and cute…

One thing about Japanese Automakers is that they were propped up by the government and still are today!  Not to mention the unfair trade practices that keeps there home markets pretty much locked they also regularly get government funding for things like Prius etc.

With strong statements from the CEO talking about pushing slot music I am sure you will soon see a new direction from Sandisk. Of course then again I could be wrong. Maybe someone from Sandisk could help explain the details and what is happening so we can get it from the source?  Please post details here.

Please don’t… if you work for Sandisk and know about this keep it to yourself. We don’t need to know. Updates on new directions in R&D would be cool but only so we could start to get funds ready for a cool new toy… but please dont waste your time posting on here about Job cuts or negative market trends.

That is why I am kinda bummed.  It seemed like the Sansa stuff was headed in a great direction with releases of the new Fuze and Clips. I am just worried that we are not going to be seeing a lot of cool new toys now that they are on hard times.

See the thing is that in OCTOBER (When most of your links were from) EVERYBODY was on Hard times. Companys Like Sandisk, and Sony, and crApple, and and Garmin and what have you, count on DECEMBER and the holidays, sometimes to make their year. I bet that as many people as bought sandisk products this past holiday season that Sandisk is Fine. So Let it Go!

I am hopeful that Tapeworm can shed some light on what departments are effected and which ones are not.  You seem to have more insight than me.

I know I bought 7 different players myself for friends and family.  Not to mention the 5 microSDs I bought to go along with them.  Just want to make sure its going to be here longer than Yahoomusic type of players.

If you look at what he said(the beauty of the “quote message” feature) he’s not suggesting that he knows which departments are affected…he’s saying that you, and he, and me, and everyone not in the SanDisk headquarters, don’t have a clue _ which _ departments are affected.

And For the record… Tapeworm, Nutron Bob, or any of the other Gurus (those are the 2 i know off hand) are just regular people who are very helpful and know a ton about the products we love so much. And They Are Awesome to be so helpful. I dont think they have a crystal ball into the inner workings of Sandisk, and know nothing that cant be found on here or from a in depth Google Search.

They do not work at Sandisk? (Tapeworm, Nutron Bob )

I dont know that 100%… But Just because thay are a guru does not mean they work for sandisk. youll notice the title changes as you have more posts.
