Hi,
My company has a research contract with the Department of Homeland Security and we are researching ways to detect if device firmware has been modified. Hard drives and flash drives are prime targets for malicious actors to modify the firmware.
We have 4 Western Digital Elements Drives, some 1 TB some 2 TB and collected signal data from them all. These drives were all purchased from the same amazon link and we actually did get different signals/data from one of the drives. Upon later inspection we found that the differing drive actually does indeed have a much older version of the WD Elements firmware on it. The other 3 drives either have the same firmware or closely released versions of the firmware running.
I’m looking for a Western Digital Employee that can provide a few versions of the WD Elements firmware for further research. At the moment, we really only have the 1 older version and 3 newer versions with the firmware already on the drives. Ideally we could re-flash each of the drives with the same firmware to prove that we are detecting the difference in firmware and not the difference in hardware.
Any help is appreciated, thanks!
