Remove prior backups

Have WD My Book 4 TB & use for backup of iMac Late 2013 IOS Mac OS High Sierra 10.13.1.
Do backups every 10days & they are dated back to Aug 2014.
Each time do backup, only update most recent changes…
Realise older backups will be deleted once disc is full (have 770Gb available of 4TBs)

Can I remove any of the old backups without adversely affecting the data stored??

If you are using time machine to backup then you should contact Apple for better support regarding their software,
