I have two WD “My Passport” USB3 2TB portable drives with hardware encryption. The drives were purchased in Dec 2012. I re-formatted one of the drives and it passes the WD diagnostic tests. However the small partition that shows up as a CD drive is now missing.
#1 I cannot find a download on the WDC website to reinstall the CD Drive. Can it be reinstalled?
#2I also cannot find a method to check if my firmware is up to date. Does a firmware check exist?
Formatting the hard drive does not erase the VCD partition. It can not be erased, removed, or uninstalled. If you can not find the VCD partition then check Disk Management in case it has not been assigned a drive letter. Also, the VCD auto-hides itself if you do not have an active password, and will reveal itself once a new password is created.
Thank you for your help. Once I added a password to the drive, the VCD appeared as you described. Some background: I removed the password since the drive was giving read/write errors. I then ran the WD Drive Utilities and the drive failed. However the drive passed all versions of the WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostics test. The Windows 10 drive check utility passed the drive after fixing vague problems. However I just received another error while copying a file to the drive. Since the drive is 3.5 years old, I plan to replace it.
