Random "Error in RAID Configuration" Message

About once, maybe twice, a week I get a message popping up telling there is a problem with my RAID configuration with my brand new MyBook Duo being used with MacOS 10.12.6 as Time Machine backup device. I run WD Drive Utilities as advised but no problems are found. All tests, even the full Drive check, pass. I have also used Disk Utilities First Aid and again there appear to be no problems.

I also have my previous external backup drive, a seven year old My Book Studio II, connected to the rear of the new My Book Duo. This was my former Time Machine backup. It also appears to be working fine. At least it is according to Disk Utility.

I do have a pre-existing issue with a vanishing WD Manager app (for the Studio II) that vanishes even when freshly reinstalled that I havenā€™t been able to get to the bottom of. Could this be the reason for the apparently spurious error messages? I have a feeling that this is a sofware issue rather than a hardware problem.

I forgot to mention, both my new Duo and my Studio II are configured as RAID 1.

Hello Hoof_Hearted,

There is ā€œwd drive utilityā€ software that would launch upon start up

go here to delete it:

FINDER - GO - COMPUTER - LIBRARY - LaunchDaemons - com.wdc.WDPrivilegedHelper.plist

DELETE THAT FILE

Then, go to

SYSTEM PREFERENCES - USERS & GROUPS - LOGIN ITEMS - UNCHECK WD DRIVE UTILITY

Hi

Thank you for replying to my post.

I canā€™t seem to find com.wdc.WDPrivilegedHelper.plist on my Macā€™s internal drive. It wasnā€™t in the LaunchDaemons folder.

I did find it in a Time Machine Backup (several copies in fact). But, because they are T M backups, I canā€™t delete those.

To verify this I turned off automatic T M backups, ejected all external volumes and did a Finder search for com.wdc.WDPrivilegedHelper.plist on just my Mac HD. Nothing found.

In fact, come to think of it, there was no folder called Launchdaemons either. There is one called LaunchAgents but it contains no WD related plist files.

In Login items there is ā€œWDDriveUtilityHelperā€ (Kind=Application) and ā€œWDDriveManagerStatusMenu (All Users)ā€ [Kind=Unknown]. Both are unchecked. The latter has a Yellow triangle with a exclamation mark inside it to the right of it.

I wonder if I should run the Mac for a while with the Studio II disconnected to see if that helps. The message seems to pop up if the Mac has gone to sleep during a T M backup.

Dean Shepherd

Hello Hoof_Hearted,

You can certainly give that a try and if issue is not resolved Maybe you should try contacting WDā€™s Technical Support about this.

Thanks. Iā€™ve now run it for while without the Studio II attached and it is still happening. Furthermore, the ā€˜Complete Drive Testā€™ stops after only two or three minutes reporting a failure.

I will raise that ticket as you suggest.

Thanks for the help.

hi iā€™ve got quite the same problems with two new Mybook Duo 8 TB. The red LED lamp is blinking and same message
Did you get a response or help of WD? Did you solve the problem?
Thank you so much

Yes. They said to them it was clearly a malfunction and it was under warrenty so I was given an RMA number immediately. It has now been sent back and Iā€™m awaiting a new device.

Okay thank you!

Youā€™re welcome. Iā€™ll come back in due course to let everyone know how I got on.

One other thing. If you do contact WD over this they will reply - of course.

They do expect a response to their email within 24 hours or your ā€œcaseā€ gets closed down. It states this clearly in their email.

So try not to do what I did and miss that part of the email. I got fixated on returning the device and missed the bit about replying.

Got a chaser email a little while later asking why I hadnā€™t replied. I was able to tell them I had already used the RMA and sent it to the address they requested and gave them the Tracking Number. Small apology for not replying sooner included.

Anyway they were happy with this and were pleased to know I had sent it back.

A tad embarrassing but there was no harm done as far as I can tell.
