Problem with an ancient external hard drive WD 2906D

Hello, everybody,

my daughter has a big problem with her old WD external hard drive. It is called “2906D”, MDL: WD-1600B011. It looks like a “WD elements” and is from the year 2006, which is at least the production year of the hard drive installed in it.

Now all 4 pins of the round connector for the power supply are broken. This connector looks like an old Apple / ADB connector. I.e. the small plastic bar is not in the middle, but at the bottom.

My daughter unfortunately has no backup of the files and pictures and she would like to have them saved.

My question is: How can I help her?

a) Is it possible to remove the old hard disk and install it in the PC as an internal hard disk? However, as it looks like my PC (5 years old) has no possibility for PATA/IDE connections.

b) I still have an old but well working WD Elements “5207G”, MDL WD5000C035-000. Could I exchange the internal hard drive with the WD1600?

c) Or I could cut the defective connector and prepare the wires to fit into the power connector of the 2906D?

I am grateful for all tips.

Greeting, rivasol
