I bought a Duo that I set up as a RAID 1. It’s formatted journaled, encrypted as I’ve seen recommended many places elsewhere. When connected via USB to my iMac it backs up via Time Machine just fine, if not slow (USB 2.0). I can backup with TM this way over Wifi as well with our MacBook Airs.
However, what I really want do - and what the people at the Apple store told me would be possible - is to connect it directly to our Time Capsule so that all machines can TM to it over Wifi without it needing to be cabled to any specific machine. I’d like to take my iMac to my office which means I wouldn’t have a dedicated machine at home to TM to and I’d rather not have to buy another machine.
I called into WD “support” only to have the rep quickly tell me that the Duo is meant to be attached only and to talk to Apple for any other advice. No suggestions, no guidance, no things to try, etc. It was the standard tech support cop-out “I don’t know - go to talk to the other people. The problem can’t possibly be us.” was the basic delivery.
Maybe they’re right and Apple is wrong. I’ll scour their forums as well.
