Passport SE -- unlock utility fails on XP

I have a 1TB Passport SE (WDBACX0010BBK-01, S/N [Deleted]) that was working just fine until this morning.

I do not use WD SmartWare but I do have the drive password-protected. Normally, when I plug it in, the WD Drive Unlock Utility pops up and I enter my password. That’s the way it continues to work on my Windows 7 laptop. However, on my Windows XP desktop, the popup I now get is an error box that says, “The application has encountered an unexpected error and is now exiting.”

The drive mounts properly in that I can open it in Explorer and see unlock.exe and the other expected directories and files. Clicking unlock.exe results in the same error message, of course.

Given the different behavior on Windows 7 and XP, it would seem that something in the XP environment is now incompatible with the WD unlock software. How do I fix this?

Thanks.

EdgarBackup,

A properly optimized and updated Windows XP Service Pack 3 system should be compatible with the Unlock utility. I would recommend performing a system registry clean-up, defragmentation, ensuring all Microsoft Windows Updates are installed, and re-installing the Microsoft. Net Framework 4 Client Profile.

I am running SP3 plus subsequent updates… Defrag utility says there’s no need for defragging.

But…

Since starting the thread, I realized that I had tried to unlock the drive from a Limited User account. When I logged into my Administrator account, it mounts just fine. Unlocking also is also problem-free on my Windows 7 laptop from a Limited User account. So, it would seem that the proper question to ask would be: Why would there be a problem running the unlock utility from a Limited User account on Windows XP SP3 and what can I do about it?

Thank you.

EdgarBackup,

The permissions and privileges applied to the core behavior of Microsoft Windows XP is not the same as Microsoft Windows 7.
