I have this old 80’s (IBM, I believe) computer, and until recently, it was happily running Microsoft DOS with no problems. Now when I turn it on, all that happens is the little cursor comes up on the little monochrome screen while I hear everything that normally happens. I hear the hard drive spinning and making its normal weird noises, like it should. On the screen, it should show everything the computer is made up of, like the name of the company that makes the hard drive, and stuff like that, but it’s not. Does anyone here know what’s going on. I’m not old enough to really know these computers.
Sounds like it’s not running POST. Look on the motherboard for a battery. It might be a coincell (soldered or socketed),ni-cad pack (soldered or plugin), ni-cad cells or other type. This battery is for CMOS settings backup and it might not allow POST to run if it’s dead. Also try unplugging the keyboard and see if you get an error message. It could be a multitude of things. Your best bet - JUNK IT! You can probably pickup a complete working similar computer for next to nothing.
