I bought a Fuze for my wife for Christmas to take to the hospital when our first child is born in February. What was supposed to be the perfect gift has turned into a nightmare. My computer won’t recognize the unit (I’ve tried every solution listed on the web) and it keeps giving me a free 90mb error message although there is nothing on the unit. It also tends to crash my computer. Does anybody have any suggestions before I take this piece back to the store for a refund? Thanks in advance!
Don’t be frustrated, most mp3 player problems root from the computer it connect.
Try to use another USB port on the computer, try to use another computer, it is almost impossible for a brand new item broken just out of box.
What Operating system are you using?
Windows XP, Vista, etc?
If your computer won’t recognize the unit where do you see this “free 90mb” error message?
Thanks

If this is brand new out-of-the-box, I would probably be inclined to take it back and get another one. Fate, omen, whatever. If things start out bad, they’re likely to continue.
Although, you could probably format it and it might straighten out. If you want to try it:
- 1st, start with the unit off.
- Open a Windows Explorer pane on your computer (Windows key + E)
- Next, slide the power switch on the side down to the HOLD postion.
- Now press and hold the center button on the Fuze while at the same time plugging in the Fuze’s cable into the bottom. It should already be plugged into the computer on the other end.
- The Fuze should be recognized under Devices With Removable Storage in the Explorer pane.
- Right-click on the Fuze’s icon and select Format… from the context menu.
- Insure that it is set to format as a FAT32 file system on the next screen. It should come up as this by default.
- Do not select Quick Format.
- Follow through with clicking the Apply and/or OK buttons to compete the formatting process. It will only take a few seconds.
- Un-plug the device from the computer and slide up the power switch to turn it on.
Do you still get the error message? Hopefully you won’t and you can now load music onto the device to sooth the expectant mommy.

The OP’s problem has nothing to do with the USB ports and YES, it is VERY possible for it to be defective right out of the box. Just take a look at the flood of posts from people who got these as Christmas presents!

This is a common error message seen on the player’s screen and the operating system of the OP’s computer does not matter.
