My WD does not function correctly

Hey everybody,

Lately my WD has caused me a ton of problems. I own a WD Elements external hdd (I’ll be willing to include more info such as model # later if necessary)

It’s formated NTFS, i’ve used chkdsk to check for errors and all that… When I copy files, it freezes, same symtoms like if the files were corrupt.

I don’t know what utility I could run to fix my drive, I have literally lost over 10gb of files and 100 hours of work. I really don’t appreaciate that. The reason I bought a WD drive is for the reliability and quality that I have always seen in a WD product over the years.

So now I am with a drive that windows says “it’s fine” but fails time after time. I have formatted it, etc. Could anyone suggest some diagnosis software?

The sad thing is, I threw the box and bill out after 3months, with my ignorance I made that STUPID mistake. My guess is that it is basically impossible to rma this… is it?

I really appreacite any help that I can get. I spent 90$+ tx. on this, I really wouldn’t want it to end up in the trash. Also if this doesn’t get fixed I don’t know if I’ll ever buy a WD product again. I have been proud to defend WD against those who claim other companies are better, but how in the world am I supposed to explain this one.

tommis15,

It is most unfortuante this has been your experience with the WD Elements, however, not all is lost. First, I would recommend changing the USB cable, as communication issues can degrade performance and data integrity. On the other hand, the following link will provide you with the necessary instructions and utilities to perform a full health diagnostic of your unit:

Please bear in mind that even without the purchase receipt, you may still be able to replace your product with us Western Digital under warranty for free as long as the default manufacturing warranty is still valid. Additional information related to verifying the warranty status and creating a Return Material Authorization (RMA) order can be obtained from the following link:
