My Scheduled Passport Backup did not run on my Schedule and no Indicator as to WHY not,

I had a scheduled Backup that was supposed to run today, Sunday at 4pm…its now 4:40pm. Below is a Snip shot of the panel.

  • using Win Explorer, I was able to open my Device and see that there were no updates in either the History or Volume folders of the ‘Backup.swstor’ since the last manual backup on July 8. The display panel does not give any indication that something went wrong, other than a Schedule time and an indicator that Backup was done on July 8.

  • I made sure that Explorer was not open to the Passport device, or an outside application was accessing the drive.

  • I do not believe that the Passport itself goes into a sleep mode, nor was my PC sleeping…I was active on the PC.

  • after 30min, I noticed that there was a new message in the WD display, "Missed Backup, at 4pm. Earlier when I checked, like 10min after Schedule, there was no indicator about a Missed Backup…only after 30min this this message appear…huh?

  • the only thing I’ve done over the last few weeks is to change my previous setup to a weekly backup (from daily) and modify the edited files. I then did a manual backup on July 8.

  • That’s the problem with this Backup, there is no Log file or interface tool to query the Failures! Why?

  • tomorrow or the next day, I will go back in and do a manual ‘Backup Now’ and report back.

Updated because image was missing from post.

Alright, after inserting the image reflecting the Missed Backup in my above post, I did a manual Backup Now this morning…July13

Here is a image:

  • as you can see, the Backup Now initiated the interactive backup and after a few min, completed the display screen with the Last Backup information.

  • one interesting item, the Missed Backup from the previous screen did not show up till about 30min after the backup was supposed to start…whereas, the Last Backup info appeared almost immediately…

  • I reviewed the History and Volume folders of my Backup.swstor and do see entries that reflect updated files, so this works.

  • So, anyone want to speculate why a scheduled backup did not start at all.

  • This also points to the failure of the software to present Log and Error messages that can help. The software made a decision to abort, WHY not report the Logic to the users…BAD!

Ok guys…this Scheduled Backup is getting to be a PAIN! My scheduled at 4pm on Sun, 7/19 again reported a Missed Backup…Of course, there was no indication as to Why…not even a glimpse or hint. I was on the PC, but did not have the drive opened or having a App writing to it. (this should not make a difference)

  • So again, this morning at 10am, 7/20 I initiated the Backup Now button and after a few minutes got a Last Backup completion. I also checked my swstor backup folders of History and Volume…and see my newer files in the Volume (the latest copy).

So anyone else experiencing this Scheduled backup not working. It worked correctly for 6mo but stared to act up after I modified the scheduled Date, and modified some of the files being backed up. Got any ideas??

I was reviewing the Help menu in a section on Pausing and Resuming automatic backups…I will try and toggle the Pause and Resume setting on this obscure pop-up window (should have been part of the main Backup window)

Hope this initiates the previously modified Backup schedule that I did when I changed the dates and files/folder…will report back next week…there also may be a update to backup, but I will wait till after Sunday.

Well here it is on Sunday at 4:15pm. Nope, my Scheduled backup at 4pm again Did Not Run. What could be wrong.

  • I don’t think I even saw a msg about backup starting and all I see is Missed Backup from my last one on the 20th.
  • I do not think that safely eject that I did during the week would affect this function, since I normally shut my PC when I’m done.
  • I was doing stuff on the drive, but I’ve done this before.
  • I don’t want to manually run the backup because I see that my other backup to my 2nd Passport (using the same Backup App) seems to go off without a hitch.
  • tomorrow, I will do a Pause, reset the time to Monday, then Resume.
  • Anyone out there have issues?

This Backup issue to me has been so confusing…Today, 1day after another failed Scheduled Backup on Sunday…

  • I modified my H passport backup to initiate at Monday, 10am
  • Backup actually started and ended after 10Mb of backup. Success!
  • So, why did this fail over the course of this thread. I was able to Force execute the Backup but was never able to do a schedule…
  • I even tried the pause/resume the schedule
  • I’m still on the older v 1.9.7375

I’m doing a little update on this thread I posted about WD Backup.

  • for the past few weeks, I’ve been having good success with Backups (one daily, the other weekly)
  • I had email/voice conversations with WD Support about what causes failures…generally they could not point to anything specific…except point to a link that said Sleep mode on you Passport Could cause a problem.
  • I have tried to test this Sleep, and honestly, I cannot find any relations to this item. I was also told that Sleep could cause your Device to disappear from the Explorer view…I have never seen that happen and cannot make this work. Since you cannot tell when Sleep (being controlled by the Discovery App) is actually working…I don’t think it puts your Passport on pause, like stopping the drive from spinning. Removing the device from Explorer only happens when I Safe Eject.
  • I have have tried to Not access the drive for hours, and even if my Sleep is set for 30min…the Backup kicks in on schedule.
  • It is possible that because the WD background applications are active ( as shown in Task Manager) that Sleep never kicks in. And if Sleep is actually working, the Backup wakes it up.
  • This background activity is the cause of Safe Eject getting a warning message…something that is fixable using the Device Manager
