My Passport is not working

I bought a My Passport external backup hard drive. I installed it according to the instructions. When I installed it, a “control panel” came up showing the extent of the backup in a small horizontal window. I used my computer for other purposes and that page disappeared. It seems to have stopped the backup process. Please, can someone tell me how to get that original “control panel” back as I have no way of knowing if my computer is being backed up or not. Please help me.
