It’s an older one, red in color. When I attach it to my laptop, sometimes it is recognized and other times it is not. It is very frustrating because you will have to stand it up in a certain angle while it is plugged in just to try to get it to show up on the computer as recognized. And if you do, you can’t touch it or you fear it tapping out of place and not being recognized.
It’s very frustrating and can take a long time just to get it recognized.
Any help? Thanks.
Sounds like either a dodgy USB Cable or a dodgy USB socket … have you at least tried another USB Cable ?
I know it does it on other laptops too, like a Mac. So I am thinking it’s the actual cable…No I haven’t tried another USB cable because I thought it had to be this specific one for this make and model hard drive? Where can I get another one? Do you have a link?
It’s a standard USB cable, you can buy a replacement from lots of places (Online or Locally)
eg. Locally, i can buy one from Officeworks, Big W, K-Mart, JayCar and 3 Computer Shops
You’ll need to double check which type though … USB2.0 Micro or Mini or USB3.0 ?
USB3.0
Thanks so much for your help…I really appreciate it. So looking at the cord it says it’s a USB Revision 2.0 and judging by your picture it’s a micro.
So you can buy these anywhere? But when then does my exact cord have the initials “WD” embedded on the ends like it’s specifically for a WD Passport external hard drive only?
Do you have a good link of where to buy a replacement one online? I’m going to try hooking it up to another computer and see if it still gives me troubles…then I know for sure it’s the cord.
The WD logo is just branding … where to buy a replacement ? use gOOgle to search
personally if i need one quickly i go to my local computer store, electronics store … if i want one dirt cheap and can wait, Ebay i guess ?
All depends where you live as to the best place to buy one
