My new 500GB my Passport does nothing

I’m tech-competent, but in no way tech-savvy.

My first laptop (going on six or seven years old) is on its way out, so I got a My Passport to backup all the photos and docs and stuff before it completely dies on me.

The instructions that came with it basically consisted of pictures directing me to plug it in and let it do its thing. So I did. And it didn’t. After poking around on the support site for a while, I figured out how to install the backup software from the drive. But I think the WD SmartWare didn’t install properly.

When I try to run it, I get an error message saying “Unable to cast COM object of type 'System._ComObject; to interface type ‘WDBackupService.WDBackupManager’. This operation failed because the QueryInterface call on the COM component for the interface with IID ‘{6BC00436-F259-4699-A261-091D65133178}’ failed due to the following error: No such interface supported (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80004002 (E_NOINTERFACE)).”

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling it, but it stops partway through and says it can’t uninstall the old version and to check if I have the proper permissions. (As the only user of the computer with all the administrative rights, I should…)

The other programs, the WD Security and WD Utilities, say that I should “Attach a supported WD drive.” Which, well, I thought I had. But they don’t recognize it at all.

I’m not sure what to do at this point, so any suggestions would be helpful.
