Yes, the memories of the little Mac, it puts Microsoft in perspective. To think, pop culture has labelled Microsoft an “opressive regime”, yet their control of your computer experience pales in comparison to the one that repeatedly touts “you’re free from it all”.
Hehehe, George Orwell couldn’t have said it better.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the feng shui of the Apple machines, albeit pitifully expensive (always has been, since my original 6502-based machines). I hope you find a happy blend, regardless of which one of the kitties is installed in OSX (what was it, Himalayan, Siamese, Tabby, Or Manx?).
For school applications, Apple has a stranglehold that is nothing short of miraculous, starting with the iPod posters and going down from that. Finding a solution in the realm of Apple involves probing Apple related connections, secret handshakes, and sometimes the black helicopter (For quick sorties, take the R44, as the Jet Ranger is much bigger and is easier to spot.)

Sorry for going off topic… I don’t know the current arrangement but when my kids were in elementary and middle school in order to get the M$oft school discount, a school had to agree to pay the licence fee for EVERY computer in the school, whether Windows, Mac, Linux, whatever. That was a HUGE disencentive to even try out alternatives such as Linux or Open Office, because you had to pay for the M$oft solutions for that computer anyway.

I graduated high shcool3 years ago. At that time teachers had the option to pic PC or Mac. The InfoTech (Office, and typing and what not) were PC, the Trades Labs (Autoshop, Metal Shop, Electronics, and CADD) were PC, but the Graphics labs (Visual Communications, Programming, and Media Production) were Mac, and my lab (I was in a group of 5 kids who actually built and maintained PCs for the whole district including a few iMacs) Had 4 MacPros and 5 PCs… Since I graduated high school I have seen this pattern in all my schools. My community college had Mac programs and PC programs, and you could pick. My art school now is ALL Mac all the time… Myself and 1 other work on PC at home. Im not a huge Mac fan because I dont like owning computers that I cant fix myself… I built my own laptop last year and It works like a charm, and now I will be replacing it with a Mac… Oh well at least its free.

Mac was not so much a loss (wrt a school paying microsoft for each computer) as (at least in our schools) they would end up with stuff like the Mac version of Office installed.
On the question of music players for Mac, you could give Songbird a look. It’s open source, from Mozilla (source of Firebird, Safari, etc)

Bump… I am looking for an “This is Awesome… I Use this… Its perfect” kinda statement. I dont mind trying stuff out, but I would like to have a non-iTunes end game if nothing works out.
Well… nothing anybody suggested worked… still looking for a NOT ITUNES program that works on a MAC that Supports OGG.
The following things are a must:
Must work on Mac OSX
OGG Playback
Not itunes
4… If it would do transfers to the fuze that would be nice… Kopymac is fine but not Ideal
It needs to manage and playback music…
Songbird worked a little… but was not stable enough, it couldnt decode some OGG codecs.
You did save all your MP3 files, I hope? Sounds like you may need to go back to them, or carry around 2 laptops, which would ■■■■. Reading through the Head-Fi forums, it seems that most of the Mac owners just use iTunes. I realize that’s not what you want to hear though.
…and they wonder why so many Apple users simply run with iTunes and iPods.
Winston Churchill said it best, explaining that the English bulldog has a flat face so that he can still breathe while holding on with his teeth. Tenacity is a wonderful thing. You’ll solve this dilemma, I am sure of it.
I’ve always “run against the grain”, and probably always will.
