My book won't mount anymore - on mac power book g4 tiger

hi i have a my book 300 gig external that stopped mounting recently. 

I have it set us as an hfs volume. if i try to run repair or verify on disk utility i get this error:

Disk Utility stopped repairing “GAMMA” because the following error was encountered:

The underlying task reported failure on exit.

Disk utility is the only place it shows up at all. The name of the volume is gamma and that shows up greyed out. 

is it done?

May be done or May be not done.

If your drive is still under warranty, you should request for a replacement.

If it is out of the warranty, you could try to open the case and test just the drive by itself with out the USB controller to see if the drive is still good. It may be the USB controller that gone bad or the hard drive.

If you are not comfortable of doing that, it is time to buy a new one.
