My Book Failure?

This morning, I heard a loud hollow sound from my computer. I went to eat breakfast and when I got back, everything seemed to function, except for the 3TB USB Western Digital My Book device. P/N: WDBACW0030HBK-04. Oddly, one by one, all the USB devices kept leaving my computer and than some would make an attempt to return and get kicked out again. I decided to reboot my system and now it takes a long time to boot. The slow boot speed is not because of the machine, but because Windows was taking a long time to recognize the 3TB drive. When the system finally boots, my system could not see the 3TB drive. Other USB devices would sometimes appear, other times disappear. When I pulled the 3TB drive off the USB port, the entire system returned back to normal.

I currently use WindowsXP for my main system. I also use Windows7 as a backup. Along with another WindowsXP added to the mix. Now no USB port on any system I have access to, will instantly see the 3TB USB drive. My main XP system does see an “Unknown Device” but is not doing anything with it. I even tried swapping the USB cable and the power adapter from my 6TB WD drive, still can’t get the 3TB to be seen. There appears to be a power button on the back of the 3TB drive. Doesn’t seem to do anything when I press it. The LED light on the front is not affected by it. For my 6TB drive, when I plug it in, the computer takes a moment to see the drive, and than it assigns a drive letter. With the 3TB drive, it makes an attempt to assign a drive letter, but at the end, isn’t able to find a drive letter. Any suggestions as to what is wrong or any possible self fixes?

Hi, welcome to the community.

If the drive is not recognized by any computer that you have, most likely is damaged, which seems to be by the troubleshooting that you did. I would recommend you to  contact support and see if they have some steps that you might’ve not tried.
