My Book Essential using a USB to Ethernet adapter

I would like to be able to assign an IP to my 2TB Essential but it only has a 3.0 USB port.  Can I get a USB to Ethernet adapter or cable and connect this to my router and it work?  I hate to pay 20 or 30 dollars for an adapter and find out it will not work.

Thanks

Jim

I would like to tell you that this device does not come with ethernet port, because this device is not a network drive. You won’t be able to do what you want to do with this drive. Let me suggest you the drive that you really need in order to do what you want to do.

Also I know that there are some routers that are coming with USB ports to connects your external hard drive. Like this you will be able to connect your drive on your network and share your information through it

I have a router that has the USB port that you are describing.  I can see the drive on my intranet.  I was wanting to assign it an IP so I can see it in other locations over the internet.  You can not assign a USB port on the router an IP.  That is OK, thanks for trying.  I might try contacting WD itself and pose this question to them.  I would have to have a reply from someone that has tried this themselfs or a technician because I feel like if it can be hard wired to the router then it can be assigned an IP.
