My Book Essential icon does not appear in My Computer

Hello,

My Book used to work on Vista operated laptop, but not anymore. On my XP operated desktop it never worked, because from the very beginning the icon was missing from my computer. Now, the icon is missing from both computers. It looks like the computers do not recognize the external hard drive.

As I understand the external drive should show in Disk Management, but it does not. Windows did not rename the drive to a letter that is already in use either. Booting the computer with the external drive will not change anything either. I think it’s there in Device Manager in Disk Drives as WDC WD3200AAJB-00TYA0. I am using CCleaner and AVG PC TuneUp registry cleaners. Could they be the possible cause of the problem? I restored the registry though, also used Microsoft FixIt and got a new USB cable, but of no avail. I also called WD tech support, but with no result. Thanks for those who will try to solve this.

Registry cleaners can cause a lot of problems. I’ve used Ccleaner with default settings without any problems for years on Windows 98, XP, Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8. I’m not a fan of AVG products or most other registry cleaners. I had to do a few installs after problems so am more cautious now. Does the drive appear to power up OK? Also make sure it’s plugged straight into an outlet instead of a power strip. Sometimes this can be a problem.

The drive powers up OK. It does not make any noise either. I don’t use power strip. I restored previous registry, but it did not help. The cable that I am connecting My Book to the computer is USB Standard Type A plug on one end and Micro-B USB 3.0 compatible (cable/male end) on the other end. I was wondering if the problem is a compatibility one? In the beginning My Book used to work on my Vista operated laptop, but it does not anymore. Also I am wondering if I should get a Micro B USB 2. I appreciate any comment, any effort regarding this problem. I see that this problem I am having is a frequent one with these external drives, so hopefully my solutions will be some people’s solution as well. Thanks for your reply.
