My 12TB Drive shows up as 9TB - reformat?

Hi. I just purchased a 12TB G-Speed Studio (0G03674). It’s formatted for Windows, and shows up as 9TB on my Mac. I would like to format it as Mac-only and as Raid 1 so that I have 6TB of mirrored storage. I have tried reformatting it using MacOS Disk Utility, thinking that would erase the whole thing and show all 12 TB, but it didn’t work. I’ve looked through the documentation and the forum but didn’t see anyone else with this same problem Can anyone help me? I’m on Mac OS El Capitan 10.11.6. Thanks.

Eric,

The drive is advertised and sold as 12TB because that is the full capacity of the drive if it was set as RAID0. We ship all drives as RAID5 for protection, and in order to do that you lose the capacity of one of the drives so that is why it shows as 9TB usable.

In order to change the RAID type you will need to use our G-Speed Software available on our site here: DOWNLOAD

We would suggest keeping it as a RAID5 device but you can change the RAID if you would like. You then erase the drive in the Disk Utility to Mac. If you need further assistance you can contact us via phone for a direct walk through. (888) 426-5214
