To Tapeworm for the reset trick (power on followed immediately by the home button) which revived an apparently dead Clip+ (wouldn’t dock)
To JK98 for the suggestion for an auxiliary battery.
Believe my problem is a failure in the low battery protection system. No big deal, if it can be fixed by the reset.
Thnaks for the kind words but I can only take credit for passing the suggestion on; I didn’t come up with the idea.
