I have two 3 TB MyBook drives formatted with NTFS for a Windows machine, one used for mirroring, the other for photographic data. I intend to use the latter to transfer the photo to my new Mac. I know that the Mac cannot WRITE to this disk, but can it READ from it just by plugging it in. (My intention would be to format the first one for the Mac, plug in the data drive, transfer all the data from one to the other, and henceforth use it for the data drive.)
This may be too much explanation, so let me repeat the most essential question. If I plug this NTFS formatted drive into my new Imac, will the Imac be able to read from it?
Thank you for your response. I actually came up with a different solution, one that should be permanent and involve fewer steps. I moved all my files over to a vacant hard drive, reformatted the MyBook under the ExFat (Fat76) format, and am now in the process of copying them all back. Both Mountain Lion and Windows 7/64 read and write to this format, so it should work perfectly. (And, if not, all the files are still on the spare hard drive in the Windows computer and I can figure something else out.
