Long Delay/Slow When Changing Tracks/Songs

I believe you are correct.   From the Tools->Options->Tags->Mpeg screen, the ID3v2 “write” formats are radio buttons – only one can be chosen.  It will write ID3v1 and/or APEv2 and/or ID3v2 tags, but only one version of ID3v2.

So, to insure you have only ID3v2.3 ISO tags in your files you should:

  1.  Select ID3v2.3 ISO tags as the kind to save

  2.  Select all your files and choose “save”

  3.  Specify ID3v1 and APE tags as the kinds to remove

  4.  Select all your files and choose “remove tag”

Write ID3v2.3 tags before removing anything just in case some of your files only have ID3v1 or APE info. Once you know your tag info is safely recorded in ID3v2.3 format, you can remove any ID3v1 and APE tags.

Don’t forget the ExtendedTags and CustomizeColumns steps above.  I found some unexpected junk doing them.

mp3tag will Save before it Removes. That is, when it sees ID3v1 it will read that, copy it to ID3v2.3, then removes what you don’t need.

And the Extended Tags thing is essential. A lot of rippers have the bad habit of putting the album cover inside every file as imbedded art. That is a huge slowdown. Highlight them all and if Extended Tags shows the album cover, it’s in every file. Click on the floppy-disc icon, which will extract and save one copy of the art as folder.jpg (or .png or whatever format the art was). Then click on the X (lower right) to get the art out of the tags.
