Log in problem with My Passport

For some years I have stored data on a WD My Passport Ultra. But now when I connect this external drive to my laptop it makes a splashing noise which indicates that it is plugged in my I cannot access the contents of the drive, i.e. the log-in panel does not show and a search of my laptop does not show that the My Passport has been/is connected. Anyone know how to solve this problem?
