Laptop won't read My Passport Wireless SSD

I just bought the My Passport Wireless SSD as a means of importing and backing up photos taken on a DSLR. One of the reasons I bought this one specifically is that it has a built-in SD card reader, and another is that it is supposedly durable enough to take with me when I travel and can withstand being accidentally dropped once or twice. I’ve had it for two days and am already having trouble with it. I thought I had set it up okay, but I’ve already imported a couple hundred photos taken on my last photography outing onto it, and now I can’t access them. When I try to connect it to my laptop with the USB cable, my laptop won’t read it, and tells me the device is corrupted. I also haven’t figured out how to access them without connecting it to the laptop with the cable. My laptop is able to detect it wirelessly when my laptop is connected to the drive’s wifi, and I find it in my device network, but clicking on it takes me to the My Passport Wireless SSD webpage.
