My external drive has numerous bad sector errors and I just discovered it last week. The 3-year warranty of this drive expired just 10 months ago. I like the unit primarily for its fast FireWire interface so that I can run my backup of my 5+ year old HP desktop. There aren’t many reasonably priced FireWire external drives out there today. So is it worthwhile to buy a barebone 1 TB HDD to replace the defective HDD myself? I saw a few video that describe the process. Buying a new USB 3.0 external drive is another option but I would need to buy a USB 3.0 PCI-Express card for my desktop. Any suggestions?

If you sure that will works, yes why not?

USB 3.0 is the way to go, the transfer speed is amazing. Unless you want go thunderbolt but is way more expensive…
