I am doing my very first backup and it is taking longer than expected. Can I interrupt it safely and how?
If I do so can I begin where I left off.

Yes it is slow for the first backup. Took overnight for me. Don’t sit there. Go do something else.
I’m not sure if you can stop it and I doubt very much you could restart from the same place. Why not try reading the Help page. That’s what it is there for. Just click in the lower left corner. You can do that while is is backing up.
