I set up an RMA to exchange my: MY PASSPORT STUDIO 1TB, but I was very concerned about the content on my drive, so I played around with it today for hours.
I tried different usb cables, different fw800 cables, different macs, different pcs, nothing worked. I even tried powered usb hubs.
This worked for me: plug in the firewire 800 cable to your computer, then plug it into the WD device. then push downward on the plug where it enters the WD. the light will flicker bright and maybe blink until you get it seated properly. BOOM, it’ll work.
I’m currently backing up everything I had on the drive b/c I’m going to exchange it for a new one.
The usb doesn’t work at all on this.
Even from day 1, which is only 1-2 months ago, the FW800 only worked when I tricked it into working by “touching” the usb cable with the usb port, for just a second, this would trigger the unit to fire up.
So obviously, there are issues with the board or something.
