How to increase data transfer speed in USB 2.0?

I have bought WD my passport 1 TB hard disk.The current speed I am getting is 140 to 160 Mb/s in direct file transfer.How I can improve the speed?

Also, why the transfer speed is very slow when taking backup using WD smartware backup software?Can we achieve tranfer speeds equal to direct transfers in bacup software?

Do you get the same performance in all of the USB ports?
