How to convert flac to mp3?

I have had sucess using Audacity for this in the past, although it 's slow because only one file may be run at a time.  Recently  I got a folder of flac files which for some reason just will not convert to mp3 using Audacity.  They take forever and eventually the “time remaining” just increases to hours.  So I have been looking for shareware for this task but can’t find any for free.  Any suggestions?

Winamp will do this, although to get the .mp2 ripping capability you have to buy the ‘gold’ version (about $20).

EAC (Exact Audio Copy) will also do this. It’s free. As well as dbPowerAmp, although I think it only has a 30-day or so) free trial period. I don’t use Media Monkey, so can’t say for sure but I think it will too.

I know there are more I’m forgetting. There are a number of free (or low-cost) options out there. Google around and try some out.

Tape Thanks.  I’ll try EAC.

There’s a bit of a learning curve with EAC, but there’s another one I couldn’t remember before. It’s BonkEnc , although I see they’ve changed the name now to fre:ac. I’ve used it before; it works good too.

The time-limited mp3 encoder in MEdiamonkey can be replaced with a perpetual one for free.

This one will do tons of different formats and is free.

thanks guys

Easy:

Use the Fraunhofer-O-Matic as shown here.  Just as good sausage is based upon good meat, your FLAC source is of course good stuff.  Add seasoning to taste, naturally.  A finer grind in the form of higher bit rate is recommended.  I use EAC for those carefully made MP3s, but have been quite tempted to go the MM with added encoder route.
