How I fixed installation error & frequent crashes in SMC with XP SP1

When I installed Sansa Media Converter, I got an installation error at the end of the installation.

It read something like: The instruction at “0x4fef10a2” referenced memory “0x0016XXXX”. The memory could not be “read”

I ignored this as the program seemed to work otherwise, except that it would crash frequently, sometimes when just moving the mouse, sometimes while in the middle of converting a video, sometimes while minimizing. This was very annoying.

I found a fix. I’m running Windows XP SP1 and it seems that this only applies to Windows XP with Service Pack 1 (the fix is already included in SP2 and up, so this doesn’t apply to those)

  1. Download the fix: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9cf87cda-c7f3-41a2-8ea3-cc4f03ff0e31&DisplayLang=en
  2. Uninstall SMC
  3. Install SMC again

No more crashes.

SMC is apparently an application made by InterVideo and the fix applies to InterVideo applications. I’m not sure of the technical details, but it works for me.

Hope this helps save someone from a lot of frustration.
