Help! WD portable drive lights up, spins but doesn't let me in

Hi -

My WD portable hard drive is getting connected, has light on, is spinning, makes some clicking sounds and even shows up as D:\ on my Windows 10 laptop, but I’m not able to access it nor unlock with password protector. Sometimes it gives an I/O error, at other times I get to the unlock screen, but it hangs when I click on it.

It was working fine till last week…is it a software driver issue that can be fixed, or a hardware error. Do I need to go to a data recovery firm? They’re asking me for $400…

I have data on this from the past 3+ years…just need to be able to access it once to transfer it out…Please advise and help!

thank you.

Hello,

I/O error usually means the drive is defective.

I recommend you try replacing the USB cable and trying on another computer if possible. You can also run a diagnostic using WD DLG.

Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows

You can try to recover the data using a data recovery software.
