I’ve followed all I know to do to install My Passport on my Mac. The WD icon appears, etc. But I see nothing that allows me to start backing up files that I would want to back up. Please advise. Thank you

You need to reformat the drive to make is completely accessible on Mac as the drive is in Read-only.
