Files randomly change to 0kb folders with same name and extention

My Book Studio II 2Tb

I formated it to NTFS to use in my windows environment. I was using it to store my media, ie movies pictures music to stream to various devices throughout the house. I mainly use Plex but sometimes I use Ps3 media server. I have not had this problem with any other hard drive before, internal or external. I just wanted a big drive to hold all my files in one place rather than being on several drives and I wanted to be able to stream without my desktop having to be on.

My media files are being randomly converted to 0Kb empty folders with the same name and extention as the file it was previous to being converted. I look in the trashes folder on the drive and it had some videos that were renamed something likeXkSH4T but those were not the ones that turned into empty folders.

Because of this, I have lost about 18 movies, 50 pictures and about 200 audio files.

Please help

Thanks,

Daniel

Hello,

Seems to me that your drive was affected by a virus. As a recommendation, try using a data recovery software to see if you can get the files back.

Could just one drive be affected by a virus? I’m running some data recovery software at the moment. It’s going to take 12 hours for the scan. If I can’t get my files back that way then I’m going to see if the HDD’s firmware needs an update.

Thanks for your input. Perhaps I will do a deep virus scan as well.

I’ll keep you updated.
