"fatal device hardware error"

So this is my fault for not paying attention . . . I won’t bore you with the details of how it happened. I just need to know if it’s fixable and what I need to do to fix it if it is.

My Passport Ultra that I own is not initialized (as seen in Disk Management) and refuses to be initialized - when I try, it gives the error in the topic. I have searched for a way to make this happen, but to no avail. I can’t format it because it’s not recognized, and I can’t get it to be recognized to be able to format it.

It’s still under warranty, but I’d like to be able to recover the data on the drive on my own. Every instruction and program I’ve run across seems to require that the drive be recognized by the system it is connected to, which I can’t make happen.

I’m at a loss. I’ve tried connecting it to a different computer, but that doesn’t help. The drive had been giving me a “scan for errors” message for a while; I guess I just finally broke it.

Any ideas, other than paying an expert to recover it? I could return to square one and rebuild my data without recovering it if I had to, but it was really so much work compiling it to begin with.

Thanks.
