Hi,
I have been using a 750gb My Passport USB 3.0 drive for more a year. The drive was working fine until recently, when it started to exhibit a rather strange problem. When I connect the drive to the PC, the partition shows up normally, but when I try to access any folder in it, windows explorer freezes up and the drive gets automatically disconnected. It then reconnects after a while, but this time windows asks me to format the drive and then gets disconnected again and so on (Some sort of a power cycle loop, maybe?). Attempting to access it via any recovery software results in it freezing up completely until the drive is disconnected. The drive also displays the same problem when run in a Linux based environment and in BIOS as well.
I tried connecting the drive to different PCs and also using different cables, but to no avail. The drive is out of warranty so a replacement is out of the question.
An interesting thing that I noted was that the drive becomes unstable as soon as it heats up a bit. The disks spin up normally and there is no untoward noises of any kind.
Any insight into this? Hardware-based solutions are also welcome…
