External Hard Drive not working

Hello,

I’ve my passport 0730 external hard disk that has some problems with it. I have tried to copy and paste a large program (about 38GB) into my hard drive so I can transfer it to my laptop. However, after I disconnected and plugged it into my laptop, my files are all gone. Only the folders remain in my hard drive. I can’t create folders or delete the folders in my hard drive. Neither can I add files to my external hard drive. It tells me that Windows was unable to locate the files. Also, it shows 229GB free of 465GB memory, even though there is no files except for my folders. Only the WD Quick Formatter.exe and WD SmartWare.exe remain, but they can’t be opened as it says Windows cannot find “.exe”.

Solution I have tried:

  • I went to the folder option and and checked for hidden folders and files in the hard drive.
  • I have tried formatting the hard drive but it says “Windows is unable to format the drive”.

Can anyone please help me with this problem? Thank you.

Try using data lifeguard diagnostic to write zeros, and then format the passport.

I’ve installed data lifeguard diagnostic, but it there is only my C: hard drive disk under the physical drive tab. I can see the J:\ drive under the logical drive tab but it is not displayed under the physical drive tab. How can I make it appear under the physical drive tab?
