I have an older My Book Essential for an iMac permanently connected.

Just to mention that whilst my login route to the machine has apparently changed, I am lucky in that I am able to save through Time Machine.

I had installed the latest Apple update before reading the WD warning.

 Whilst I feel for those unable to do so, I still appear able to safely save all my generated information, I have left the external hard drive connected.

As long as you don’t have WD SmartWare or WD Drive Manager on your computer, you should be fine.
