External Drive Not Recognized by My Computer

I recently purchased a SanDisk 2TB SSD to offload files from my nearly full 500GB drive. After formatting it to Apple APFS, I transferred several files, and everything worked smoothly for the first few days. However, now, whenever I start up my computer, I receive a warning that the drive cannot be read. I’m given options to ignore, eject, or initialize it—the last of which would erase all my files. The drive won’t mount, and I’m unsure what’s causing the issue. Any advice?
