Encrypt Drive (or part thereof), e.g. with BitLocker?

Hi all,

I’m thinking of buying a My Passport Wireless. I live in a house share, and thus share a wifi network with others. Is there a way to let the My Passport Wireless on the private network we share, but make sure only I can access the data I store on it?

Is there a way to encrypt the data on it, e.g. with Windows’ BitLocker?

Or could access be managed by formatting the drive with NTFS and setting appropriate file permissions (i.e. only grant access to my user id and deny access to all other users)?

Regards,

Chris

No.  If it’s on your WiFi network, anyone with a computer can get access to the data, as it’s not password protected.   Even encrypting the data won’t help you as people can still delete it.

If you encrypt the data, then the Passport can’t even read the metadata in any media files, so it won’t be of much use.  And setting NTFS permissions doesn’t have any effect on a network connected file share.

Your best bet is to use the MPW as its OWN wireless network instead of connecting it to your shared house network.
