e260 windows 7 cant convert wmv video

I’ve updated the firmware, downloaded most recent sansa media converter 2 (which said it was windows 7 before i downloaded it, but under system requirements info says xp or higher?) .  have windows media player not sure what base, it says version 12.blablabla, copyright 2009.  this is the first time I’ve tried to put a video on it.  at this point the converter is telling me that I need to make sure I have the right codec or that the file is incompatable or corrupted.   it’s a .wmv file.   if anyone has done this successfully please advise.  thanks
