Drive in Use BUT Quick Removal Policy

MyPassport Ultra WDBZFP0010BBK - 05 Purchased Jan '15 .
I had been able to achieve Safely Remove by first Clking “Quit Malwarebytes” - BUT that has failed now.
I Just DISCOVERED that the Default for this Drive is QUICK REMOVAL (Computer/ hi-light Ext Drive J/ Properties/ Hardware/ hi-light Drive/ Properties/ Change Settings/ Policies …

May I DISregard the “Drive in Use” popups and simply UN-Plug the Drive?
I do it with small “thumb drives” but am fearful that a MyPassport is seen by the system as something “Different” and a Lock-up or data loss may occur.

What OS are you using? Also, you can simply turn off the computer and then unplug the drive.

Win 7-64 Hm Prem I alternate 2 WD Drives almost daily and Turn-Off-Computer would be the Very Last and Unacceptable resort.

WHY does the Quick Release Policy option exist IF it is Not Safe to use (detach even with “Drive in Use” pop-up)?
Just need a WD staff-er to state, Yes you can, No you can’t, or We’re not sure.
Thanks for the Reply.

Well, I can tell you that if you just pull the cable (or thumb drive) without safely removing it, first, you run the risk of corrupting the drive and losing the data on it. Especially after copying data to the drive.

Make sure that any programs that use the drive are closed, especially after transferring data to the drive. See if that helps.

That hasn’t been true for thumb drives BUT I don’t have the nerve on MyPassport after what you just said.
I watched on Resource Monitor / Process Monitor and saw All CPU -0’s- after Disabling WD Smartware and NEVER can tell WHAT keeps it from DIS-engaging for over 3 hours. It finally Released but that’s No Solution.

BTW, Win 7 Safely Release hasn’t worked in 200 years - it’s the WD Quick View Icon in Sys Tray that I use.

So in conclusion, The Quick Release Policy check for the Drive is just a mean joke, and I’ll have to hope the Safely Release has a change of heart and starts working again. It Released the last time with Mbam 3 working; I usually had 100 % success by clking Quit Mbam from Sys Tray.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Well, the thing with external drives is the buffer. It’s the data left in the buffer, that can cause the corruption if you just jerk the cable.

I use it all the time and it works fine for me. You may be looking at other OS issues. I would look into what bloatware you got running that could cause these problems.
