Don't give up upgrading SA510, Question on SA510 Lifespan after firmware

Hoping this info helps someone. I have an SA510 that I bought last year. It worked fine for about 4 to 6 months. Then it would fail to mount in Windows. I thought all the files were lost.

I didn’t upgrade the firmware in the 6 month time frame, thinking all the files were lost. I recently ran the firmware update and the drive seems to work fine, I had (almost) no lost or damaged files.

The problem trying to get the firmware updated was to get the drive mounted long enough for the update to run. Windows tended to mount, dismount, mount, dismount hundreds of times the drives. I installed the Dashboard app and ran it as soon as the system started up. I didn’t use hot-swappable SSD, so I had to reboot the system on each try. Took about 20 tries.

So if you’re in the same boat and have a drive that doesn’t work, haven’t upgraded the firmware and its been a few months … give it a few tries. I got lucky. I was literally about to throw out the drive and then it worked.

Now that the firmware is updated, the “SMART” detection reports no problems, will this drive last? I’m not looking to RMA or anything.
