Dirty Volume (exFAT) created by extracting file upon hard shut-down. (External HDD)

Problem: I was extracting a file from winrar and alt-tabbed to a video game which made my PC stuck on a black screen. I tried alt+tab, crtl+alt+delete, and ctrl+shift+esc; but after minutes of nothing, I did a Hard reboot with the tower’s power button.

The victim: Western Digital “MyBook” external Hard Drive formatted in exFAT (was the default).
Not even 1 year of use (First time It’s given me a problem).

When moving files over one-another to replace the old &/or creating a file to the drive, I get
Error 0x80071AC3: An unexpected error is keeping you from copying the file.
(Note: I can copy the files to another drive just fine, though don’t know how to tell if they’re damaged but I’m assuming they’re not.)

using DSKCHK /R:
Error: An unspecified error occurred (766f6c756d652e63 2f1)

Troubleshooting: Western Digital Data LifeGuard Diagnostics (DLGDIAG)
Under “Logical Drive:” the drive in question, L:, is listed but not listed under “Physical Drive:”.
(I can only select drivers under physical to check and recover errors, not the Logical Drive section).

Question: If I re-format the drive to NTFS, will this fix the dirty volume or will it still be prone to breakage/dirtiness in the future?
I’d like to explore other options before doing that however. Options I’ve searched online seem to only be helpful if using NTFS.

Hello AT.D,

You can try to format the drive into NTFS. However, using the drive with a exFAT file system should create such issues.

Maybe you should try contacting WD’s Technical Support about this.

Should or shouldn’t?
Also, do you know if it’s safe to use Western Digital Data LifeGuard Diagnostics on other hard drive brands like HGST or others for doing repairs? Or is it best to use their own software?

Hello AT.D,

Using the drive with a exFAT file system shouldn’t create such issues.

Also, we have not tested using WinDLG software with non WD drives. I would recommend you to use those software’s only which are provided by other companies to test their drive.
