Create a new User in the MPW

G’Day folk,

I would like to create a new User ID on the MPW so that I wasn’t using the same User ID as everybody out there.

The reason, if it isn’t obvious, is that using any default User ID, Password, and such, leaves my MPW open for others to connect to it, just by knowing the default User ID.

Yes, I have wireless security turned on, but sometimes people are allowed on my network, and I don’t want them to go investigating the admin interface of the MPW.

Yes, I could add a password to the admin interface, so they couldn’t get in anyway. But I don’t want to have to enter a password every time I look at the web interface.

Having a non-default User ID is a simple first stop security measure on all devices, I believe.

There was actually a Guest User ID the first time I set up the My Cloud App on my iDevices. In fact I selected the Guest User ID at first on my iPhone, but then when I wanted to change to the Admin User ID, I couldn’t, except after uninstalling the App and reinstalling and setting it up from scratch. Now that I am using the Admin User ID, I can’t switch back to the Guest User ID either, as the User ID defaults to what has been used previously in the login dialogue.

So basically, there is a significant lack of User management in hte MPW firmware.

Anyway, does anybody know how to change the Admin user to say Fred, or add a new user called Fred and add them to the Administrator group, WITHOUT hacking the firmware?

My router allows for me letting guests access the internet, but not into my network if I want it that way.  Time for a newer router. perhaps?

Actually my router has a guest wireless network as well, although I haven’t used it is ages. I just about forgot it was there.

Good point, but this is just as much about that first layer of security I like to use: Obfuscation.

By not using default User IDs, Passwords and such, the casual hacker is discouraged from trying too hard.

Not all routers allow the slicing and dicing I described above of guests using internet but not network.
