Corrupt files, Can't read

Somehow the HD got corrupted and cannot be accessed, the message reads “Files corrupted, cannot read”. Is there anything I can do to save the HD or is it now a paper weight? Can I Format the drive? If so, how? I don’t care about what’s on it.    Any help would be appreciated.
