im trying to convert avi files but the process stay at 0%. any advice or tips?
Chance are, you’re missing a codec or two that SMC needs to run the conversion process. Download QuickTime, even though it’s an Apple app. It’s got an important codec in it. Also google K-Lite codec pack and download/install that too.
Then SMC should have all the tools it needs at it’s disposal to convert your videos for you. 
I left a post with a similar problem and the solution. The new converter seems to not like avi. I converted many avi’s until I downloaded the latest version of smc and it stopped working, stayed at 0% like yours. You can either convert them to wmv wich worked for me, or get an older version.
